Frequently Asked Questions
Questions About Transcription
Can I download my transcripts?
Yes, SpeakerText allows you to download all of your transcripts, either as plain text files or as time-stamped XML documents.
Do I have to install the interactive transcript plugin, or can I use the transcripts separately?
No, you do not have to install the plugin. If you want, you can copy/paste or download individual transcripts. You can also programmatically pull in transcripts to your site or a database via our API.
Do I have to sign a long term contract?
No, you pay for each video or audio you transcribe and that's it.
Do you offer transcription in languages other than English?
Not at this time. Multi-lingual support is in development, check back for updates.
Can videos on our site be supported, or just YouTube's right now?
CaptionBox, our interactive transcript application, works with self-hosted videos that use the JW player, Brightcove, Ooyala, YouTube and Blip.tv. That said, we can transcribe any video you give us, regardless of whether CaptionBox works with the player.
Can you transcribe audio?
Yes! Just paste in the URL to the audio file like you would for a video and it will work just fine.
Can the text that gets extracted from the tracks be hidden?
While yes, you can technically do that it, I'd advise against it as it Google indexes javascript to look exactly for that kind of thing. A better idea is to make the content available and viewable but only after the user does some action. The SpeakerText transcript application allows for this. For example, Bob Vila did this when he used SpeakerText in his new video site: here
Questions About CaptionBox
How do I get CaptionBox working on my site?
We provide the code for the plugin for free. With the help of a developer you should be able to get it working in no time. Please refer to the documentation and license.
What happens to our webpage when the CaptionBox text drawer is opened?
By default, the text drawer pushes the content beneath it down the page. However, this setting can be changed in the code so that the text drawer floats over the content immediately below CaptionBox, hiding rather than displacing it.
Does CaptionBox affect our page layout?
CaptionBox attaches itself to the bottom of the video player and adds 30 pixels of height, pushing any content on the page below it downwards by the same amount. CaptionBox automatically adjust its size to match the video width.
Is CaptionBox compatible with the iPhone and iPad?
Yes! CaptionBox is 100% Apple device compatible.
What if I have my own custom video player or use a third party service not on your list of supported players?
We are happy to build custom player integrations upon request. To work, CaptionBox requires Javascript access to the following player commands: play, pause, seekTo and current time.
